What it is

The opulent decadence of the Eau de Parfum captures the overtly sensual spirit of the original parfum designed by Yves Saint Laurent, only in a lighter spray form. Striking notes of mandarin and bergamot are made mystical with middle notes myrrh and jasmine. A final accord of deep amber laced with Opoponaux imbues the scent with its celebrated rapture. In a chic Chinoiserie-inspired flacon.

Notes: Vanilla Absolute, Carnation Accord, Jasmine Absolute, Mandarin Accord

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I adore Opium and have done so for years, Opium has been my favourite for decades. Not much is needed on the skin at one time and the fragrance is to die for. I do like the spray but the more concentrated Opium that is dabbed on the skin is pure luxury.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not the old Opium...but it's still wonderful! I agree that this is missing the magic of the old Opium. It definitely lost something very special when it was reformulated. However, it's still pretty awesome! Other than the old formula, there's nothing I'd rather have on my wrists. And since the old formula isn't coming back...I accept what is, and am happy with my purchase. Thank you!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love Opium but miss the original scent. I must confess I am a life long Opium fan. I have not worn another fragrance since 1976; however, I do miss the original scent. I used to get stopped by strangers asking me what I was wearing or just that I smelled marvelous. I do not get the same reviews today, but Opium is still a classic for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not The opium I've been wearing for over 40 years I've been trying to find the body oil and body powder and can't find it anywhere. It is not on any YSL in the US, England, and Canada. I sent in a request to see if I can somehow still purchase some of my opium products.I never received a reply to my email. I don't know what fragrance I'll wear next but it won't be a YSL product for certain.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is not my opium of 40 years I have been wearing Opium since 1978. I am sadden by the change in my signature fragrance. It is appalling that it was changed without advising longtime customers. I now have to find a new fragrance.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Reformulate Back to Original Formula I have worn only Opium since 1979. I loved it but am saddened to have to search for a new signature fragrance. I noticed a change about two to three years ago. I understand that YSL has tweaked its formula in anticipation of various laws in Europe. YSL has tweaked out the basic character of Opium, it lacks the lusciousness, headiness and staying power of the original formula. In this day and time I would have thought that your chemists could have done a better job with the reformulation. If you can not recreate the original character, I wish you would just discontinue the line. To add to all of this, several years ago I made inquiry with YSL about a change in formula - your response was "no change". I am so disappointed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from BEWARE! SOMETHING HAS CHANGED Opium is the only parfum I’ve used since the late 1970’s. My husband buys it for me every Christmas. I won’t use any other. I absolutely love Opium. However, I was gravely disappointed Christmas 2017. The fragrance has change drastically. The scent isn’t the same and it doesn’t last on your skin. Bring back the REAL OPIUM and then ORIGINAL SPRAY UNREMOVABLE SORAY CAP. If consumers pay the asking price listed then all consumers deserve the REAL OPIUM in its ORIGINAL state. If YSL has changed the scent of Opium then YSL should not be charging as so much for a fragrance that doesn’t smell like Opium and doesn’t last all day. The real Opium lasted all day long and I received compliments everyday on the scent. I would always say it’s YSL Opium Parfum that you smell.

Several months ago a "new" Opium was introduced and my daughter took me to the store to preview it. I did not care for it at all. It was not a problem at that time, because I had an ample supply. Last week I purchased a new bottle and noticed a difference at once. Do you think that they combined the two fragrances tocut their losses?

The formula is slightly different as they cannot use ambergris in the scents they sell in the USA so you can thank the EPA. I've been wearing Opium since 1978 and I noticed the change, but it's still the only thing I will ever wear--I've worn it my whole life. Dec 01, 2013

I adorre Opium Perfume and Have bought it for many years and have contstantly had wonderful comments on it and many men have inquired as to what it was so they can purchase for their wives ( True Story) However - since the New Bottle has come 0ut I think there is definitely a change in the fragrance - Yes it is still stunning - but I think not quite the same as it was before - What has been changed? I have used this perfume for as long as I can remember and because I love it so much My 42 yr old daughter wont buy it for herself as she considers it "Mums Perfume" so I truely have noticed a suttle change in aroma - Right Or Wrong??

Sharon is correct, it is different than it used to be, I noticed it immediately as does anyone with a perfurmer's nose like Sharon and myself. However, the vast majority of users don't notice the difference.

TO ALL THOSE NOTICING A DIFFERENCE IN THE NEWER OPIUM: America is one of the countries that passed a law forbiding the import of Ambergris or products containing Ambergris. Ambergris is a substance taken from whales. It is what has given many perfumes a more enhanced and luxurious scent for many years. Chanel has also gone through reformulations on their scents imported to the U.S. There are some countries that don't abide by these regulations, but you would need to research this on your own. The bottom line is: Please do not blame YSL, for they are just abiding by the law. I will still use Opium - even the reformulated scent is wonderful to me.
