In osmosis with his subtle and sparkling personality, Lloyd Simmonds's creations are invitations to explore the essence of a passion. With "Etincelles de vie" (sparks of life) and "Pulsions de couleurs" (colour instincts), make-up is for him a palette of emotions from which he draws the essence of a character to reveal a face made of shadow and light.

For a number of years he has been collaborating with the top international magazines in France, the US, Italy, Germany, Japan, the UK and Russia, including Vogue, Numero, Harper’s Bazaar, Citizen K, Amica, Flair and the New York Times.

Lloyd also works with the big names in fashion and beauty photography, including Karl Lagerfeld, Patrick Demarchelier, Jean Paul Goude, Arthur Elgort, Miles Aldridge, Greg Kadel and Ben Hasset.

His continued interest in the theatrical aspect of fashion has also led him to collaborate in the fashion shows of Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Gucci, Lanvin, Dior Couture and ready-to-wear, Valentino Couture and ready-to-wear, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabanna, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Comme des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto, among others.

A visionary aesthete, sensitive artist and talented all-rounder, Lloyd Simmonds has a unique way of working with colour. His masters, Van Dongen and Otto Dix, are found in German Expressionism, where colours blossom on canvas in solid shades of great intensity. His blank sheet is the face, over which he bends to apply his upstrokes and downstrokes. With the aid of a brush, which he acknowledges as his chief mode of expression, he stages women with a beauty that is not only a matter of rigour and perfection. With Lloyd, it is pure expression. Radical. Feline, and like a chrysalis...

"I want women to reinvent themselves through colour, adapting it to the different moments in their lives."

In this way, since 2010, Lloyd has been bringing a new dimension to the creation and expression of Yves Saint Laurent make-up. He creates its colours, and participates in designing new products and devising collections, textures and new rituals. Working with the development teams and laboratories, he thus helps to expand the style of Yves Saint Laurent make-up and promote the expression of something all women seek: to stand apart from others while remaining themselves.

"The most beautiful face is one where the personality truly stands out: it is a question of a glow, a force."

Deeply inspired by the world of theatre and ballet, Lloyd Simmonds stands at the crossroads of beauty and art. He is one of the most creative and sensitive international make-up artists of his generation.

Born in the shadow of the Rockies in North Carolina, he emerged into the light many years ago, and his essence still reflects his formative years in a wild countryside where flowers were few but intensely coloured: a silent, controlled surface and an interior seething with activity.
